Hello, world. It's official, Nerd Jar is LIVE! ūü•≥

After months of preparation, the day has finally arrived: Nerd Jar is LIVE and open for business!

We're extremely excited to launch our online store and take the first steps toward our vision of a sustainable fashion brand that encompasses style, simplicity and, above all, respect for our environment.

Who is behind Nerd Jar?

We're Matt and Chris, brothers and¬†half-Dutch / half-South African by blood.¬†While we currently live in The Netherlands, we were fortunate to grow up moving country every few years and being exposed to an incredible range of different people and places. This, combined with some of our experiences scuba-diving ‚Äď where the bleached coral and proliferation of ocean plastic was laid bare ‚Äď is where¬†our passion for the planet¬†stems from.

We're the first to admit fashion isn't¬†necessarily our fort√© ‚Äď by trade Matt is a business person & Chris is an engineer ‚Äď but we¬†saw an opportunity to make a difference and decided to throw caution to the wind.¬†By keeping things simple and maintaining a clear focus on quality & sustainable practices,¬†we're sure that with a little help from our fellow eco-nerds (that's you ūüėČ) we can achieve our vision for a greener future.¬†

Thanks for supporting us on this journey, and be sure to follow our Facebook and Instagram pages to stay updated! We can't wait to welcome you into the fold.

Why is sustainable fashion so important to us?

For us, the main motivation to focus on sustainability relates to the environment, however the importance of sustainable fashion as a whole extends beyond that to social implications too.

The fashion industry has a pretty bad track record when it comes to caring for our planet. Here are some quick not-so-fun facts about the fashion industry:

  • It generates¬†as much as¬†10%¬†of the world's carbon emissions
  • Has already led to more than¬†1.4 million trillion¬†plastic fibres in the ocean
  • Is responsible for¬†20%¬†of global wastewater
  • A garbage truck full of textiles is landfilled or incinerated¬†every second

Social concerns in fashion are also prominent, especially those relating to the¬†use of child labour and "sweat shops". According to the International Labour Organisation, around¬†152 million¬†children are in child labour globally (almost¬†1 in¬†10 children worldwide) and progress towards reducing¬†this number has slowed in recent years. By all accounts, a similar story remains true for sweat shops ‚Äď and they may not be in the "far away" places you'd expect (see¬†here).

These are just a few of the reasons it's so important to care what you wear and purchase clothing from brands that put sustainability at the heart of what they do. We realised this as consumers, but saw an opportunity to do more as a business as well (see below).

Wherever you buy your clothes, be sure to do your research and look out for labels like Fair Wear and GOTS.

What are we doing to be more sustainable/eco-friendly?

We have outlined our sustainability efforts in greater detail here, but to summarise:

  • Our clothes are made from sustainable materials like 100% GOTS organic cotton and recycled polyester
  • We donate 50% of our profits to environmental non-profits and are a registered member of 1% for the Planet
  • We've partnered with One Tree Planted to give you the option to plant a tree with your order for only $1 (‚ā¨0.84)
  • The packaging we use to ship your order is 100% plastic free and is both compostable & degradable

That's it for now, but we'll be posting more content to our blog going forward. If there are specific things you'd like to hear about and/or of course if you have any feedback, let us know in the comments! You can also always reach us via live chat or this form.
